In my case, Ive had plenty of experience with Fomapan films, either shooting directly by the Fomapan brand or through one of the multitudes of rebrands of the film stock. However I think there are some quite distinguished features to the grains of these films that should remain constant regardless of the technique used. Ill have to try it now; thanks for the recommendation! den habe ich in D76 zu recht brauchbaren I develop FomaPan400 in d76 1:1 for 13 minutes and am happy with the results, although, I just went back to HP5+. I buy all of my film from Analogue Wonderland. But honestly, Fomapan 400 Action is nearly indistinguishable from the two slower speeds in terms of grain, contrast, and image quality. totally agree with the article. As a winter/autumn all rounder the Kentmere is serving me well, and Fomapan as a high-light film makes a lot of sense. Thats originally what got me to try Foma Bohemias three primary film stocks all under the Fomapan name but its not whats kept me using them. Trees dont move. Fomapan 400, exposed for the wall/tent light. Some people maintain that it has that vintage TriX feel from the 60s. It also dries flat so picking it up is a little trickier. These are nice, there is something about the crappy anti halation layer film when you pull it and blow the highlights a bit, it turns the glowiness up to 11.How do you prevent scratches, Simon? Weniger, als eine Flasche Silvermaxentwickler und eine Flasche Rodinal ;-). Otherwise Id say its a tossup between Kodak Tri-X and Ilford HP5 Plus. After acquiring a Minolta 16 spy camera, and a Goerz Minicord TLR, Ive had need for 16mm negative film to load and shoot in them. I quit shooting Fomapan 400 because it was so scratch prone for me.Also, whats your Plustek workflow like Im thinking of ditching silverfast for vuescan, Im hearing vuescan makes for more neutral images because silverfast always wants to employ negafix profiles and rubbish like that (half the films I shoot dont even have a negafix profile). Simply register for free here We are always happy to welcome new members! But the real issue for me is that I am about to try bulk loading for the first time, so there is a possibility that I will lose it all. Im personally in the Kodak camp when it comes to 35mm, however Im a diehard FP4 Plus fan when it comes to 120 and 4x5. Das braucht nicht viel Platz. Some have noted that the foma offering doesnt perform well at box speed, whereas there seems to be a fair amount of confidence in the Kentmere film working at 400. Theres any number of things I could try. I bought some and tried it and it worked. Whether thats true or not, it is widely known that Arista film (Freestyles house brand) is repackaged Foma; the Holga branded film sold by Freestyle is as well; and, Kosmo Fotos Stephen Dowling has been quite open about his ISO 100 film being Foma too. Hopefully this will be apparent when you look at the images below, which you can click on to get a closer look. Warum hast den denn den Agfa Kipp verwendet, denn es ist ja vermutlich ein Ilford Film. Review | Kentmere 400 vs. Tri-X vs. HP5 Plus. The same can be said for HP5 Plus. Thanks for taking the time to read this article! Give good old Kodak Tri-X a workout. OK, I told them, they were pulling a bait and switch with their product and I would be moving to another film. Fomapan 400 is a black and white negative film that has a very unique look. Trying to choose between black and white films can often feel like trying to understand the difference between cappuccino, latte or a flat white. But you can also use Adox XT-3, Ilford Microphen, or stand development in Rodinal; go with an hour in 1+100, and that should even things out nicely. Grain is just acceptable on 35 mm film and no problem if you are working on medium format. I am retired and still do not have enough time to photograph, let alone experiment with different films. In their world, it was imperative to get the shot (a few were still using 45 press cameras) so each step of the process carried equal weight: exposure, developing, printing. However due to my slow shooting style I didnt have these images ready in any kind of timeframe that would make sense, and have since shot a number of rolls of both, which has given me a little more to talk about. I dont think this had anything to do with overexposure since my F100 is usually pretty consistent in matrix metering mode. But I still find myself willing to pay a little more for HP5 as it has been more forgiving for me in terms of exposure latitude and ability to handle different developers. Tri-X at 320 is a wonderful look but one roll at 35mm is twice the price of Fomapan, sometimes even more than half! Fomapan gives a high contrast result in most situations, including even/overcast light. Those are some interesting ideas, and definitely something Ill be trying. Fr ihn rume ich das Labor gerne, Welcome, dear visitor! Zu teuer ist er auch nicht: im 10er-Pack 4,39 bei Fotoimpex. Cheers! Kodak Trix 400 in Rodinal. Ive shot numerous rolls of this film to test repairs Ive made to my cameras, but not very many on what Id consider serious work. It is nice to know that detail is there, especially if I was thinking of taking this negative to the dark room and might want to pull it out in some of those areas: I take most of my photos outside in standard British weather, and I need a film that can be under or over exposed occasionally and still give results that I can get acceptable images from. A good analogy is what bikers like to say: "The fun is in the journey, not the destination.". Thank you! Happy shooting! I cant find a reputable source to this, and theres nothing mentioned in Fomas technical sheets, so Im really not sure what to think about this. You can see the loss of highlight at the top of the frame, but there are more shades of grey that are maintained. I want to ask a question about developer; What kind of developer was used? Is that the new Jane Bond? 1. Just out of curiosity, which developer/dilution did you use to process the film? In any case, most of my enjoyment comes from the process, not my crummy images. Very little shadow detail, but great when you know how to use it. I think people looking for that aesthetic and willing to be less cavalier with their metering would be happy with the lower cost of Kentmere. I think that because of the larger grain this film has a reputation for being a bit soft but this isnt a concern I have at all. Except that if things go wrong then the monetary loss is greater with the more expensive film. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Ich bin immer etwas unsicher welche Entwicklungszeiten ich nehmen soll, da ja nie klar ist um welche Version des Filmes es sich handelt. Id guess the image on the right is Fomapan and vice versa. Film Comparison: Kentmere 400 Vs Fomapan 400. Go figure. 1. Because Fomapan is a classic, old-school type of emulsion, its performance in 135 format is what youd more or less expect when shot in the much smaller frame size of 35mm film, which in a word, a bit grainy. Ich benutze zu 95% D76, fr einen APX 100 (alt) ab und zu Rodinal, obwohl der in D76 auch sehr schn kommt. I started off with HC-110 but found the dilutions impractical for most film I shot. Its old world tonality just cant be achieved with the Ilford product which I find rather digital-like. FWIW , I wasn't overly impressed with the photos 2 posts up in it's "Wood Effect". It seemed I was getting better results with my R72 filter. Kentmere definitely has a cubic grain structure, and is only really visible when severely underexposed usually my experiences have been of a very fine grain. I A well exposed frame of Kentmere in overcast conditions will still have good contrast between the extremes, but a Fomapan shot under the same conditions will be that much darker, and that much lighter in areas that would still be grey on the Kentmere. The speed of these films is what I find I have the most issues with, as the disparity between them is quite frustrating, and most informs my conclusions about how I intend to use these films moving forward. Ansel Adams did good tree work. I decided to give Fomapan 400 a try after discovering that it is exactly the same price as Kentmere 400. Fomapan 400 is one of those polarising films, either you love it or hate it, and even those who love the film have mixed opinions. Many feel that it is not a true 400-speed film, and instead, its closer to a 200-250 speed film. Update: May 26, 2021Added a notation that the Fomapan data sheets indicate that the anti-halation dye clears during development, but that it has not been my experience that it does. So by exposing for the shadows, youre basically over exposing it 2-3 stops and thus placing the shadows off the toe and onto the linear part of the film curve? November 20, 2019. In my experience it really shines one stop from box, at EI200. One word of caution when scanning Kentmere films with flatbed scanners like the Epson V600 or V800 - be very careful with the Unsharp Mask. Id probably let it sit in the developer a little longer next time.Regardless of the negative density, the results speak for themself - just look at the detail in the chrome of the motorcycle pictured below. Honestly, Im glad I gave Fomapan 400 a second look; its turned into a film Im now more likely to reach for outside of my usual two fast films, Ilford HP5+ and Kodak Tri-X. JavaScript is disabled. It has lower dynamic range, and must be treated carefully regardless of what its being shot at. Both of the images below are lower contrast than anything Id ever print, but as you can see, whilst we still have some detail in the shadows on the Kentmere image, our Fomapan has some pretty fine detail right across the image. Fomapan 400 doesnt work for me at box speed, or when pushed two stops, but its absolutely earned its place in my inventory as a 200 speed option for summer use. du hast freie Wahl: - mit Rodinal 1+50 fr gute Empfindlichkeitsausnutzung bis 640 ASA, Schrfe und normale Kontraste, (aber mitunter lange Entwicklugszeiten, die beim Agfakipprhythmus anstrengend werden), - mit Rodinal 1+100 fr hnlich gute Ergebnisse bei weiger Bewegungsarbeit fr den Arm in der (semi-)Standentwicklungund sparsamerer Ausnutzung der chemie, - mit Atomal49 fr schne Grauwerte aber nur bis 320 ASA und etwas weniger scharf, dafr weicheres Korn, - mit D76 fr Nennempfindlichkeit und etwas krzere Entwicklugnszeiten, - mit Rodinal 1+25 um den 60er-Jahre Zeitungsfoto-vintagelook mit ordentlich Korn und knackigen Kontrasten wiederzubeleben.
